The 25th Philippine-American Exposition will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center on September 18 & 19, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Since numerous booths are still setting up when the doors open, it’s better to arrive for brunch on Saturday. Kainan Nino, Kainan Sa Kanto, Josephine’s Bistro and Bar amongst others will be there. Rule of thumb is to fall in line in front of the booth that has the longest line, and to order the dishes that everyone else eating. Most plates will have lumpia Shanghai (a version of an egg roll that is usually filled with seasoned beef and/or pork then dipped in sweet and sour sauce), pancit (the Filipino version of chow mein), adobo (chicken or pork that is cooked with garlic, vinegar and soy sauce) and turon saba (an egg roll that is filled with plantain and at times with a sliver of jackfruit which is rolled in brown sugar and fried).
You might be able to enjoy your brunch while being entertained by Jolina Magdangal, Kris Bernal, Carl Guevara or Jamie Avancena. If you aren’t able to watch them, there are numerous others that will be performing. The Little Miss Philippines Universe pageant usually steals the show from the Miss Philippines Universe pageant. There are people that attend the expo just to watch all the celebrities, performers, and contests. The expo closes at 8:30 p.m., but the booths close early since there aren’t very many people that stay after the entertainment is over.
On Sunday, September 19, 2010, Holy Mass begins shortly after the doors open at 9:00 a.m. After Mass, the lines at the food booths are longer than usual. This is the best time to walk around to the booths that are advertising discounted fares and tour packages to the Philippines. There are also booths with Filipino clothing, jewelry, shoes and at times furniture. The expo is a chance for local businesses to have a booth and network with everyone. Numerous booths will be selling Philippine condominiums, since there are Filipinos that intend to retire in the Philippines. A small amount of U.S. dollars goes a long way in the Philippines.
